"Calvin & Hobbes" by Bill Watterson

Welcome.

This website belongs to Rev Rory Dalgliesh, Methodist chaplain to the University of York, England.

I work alongside full time Anglican and Roman Catholic chaplains, as well as representatives of other denominations and faiths. I also share ministry to St Paul's Church, Heslington, an ecumenical church just off campus, with an Anglican priest.

Why "Questions not Answers"?

This site is an attempt to make interesting and worthwhile conversation.

Faith and life ask questions of us. We are surrounded by complex and unique events, circumstances and relationships. I am a mystery to myself most of the time. God continues to surprise me. Those who share my life do just the same.

Who am I? Who is God, and what is God like? Who are you? What do I believe to be real and true? How do I live my life in such a way that others are blessed by my presence? What does it mean to be part of a community? What is my deepest longing? What does that say about me?  How do I make sense of suffering in my life and the lives of others? How do I respond to it?

These are all important and necessary questions for me as I live my life. Other questions come a close second. Questions like: Chocolate or vanilla? Or both?

None of these questions has one answer that satisfies, and the answers I do find are usually just markers on my journey, starting points for a fresh round of exploring and learning, and hopefully growing.

My intention is a simple sharing of my thoughts and views on life and the Christian scriptures, to give those who share my life and work the opportunity to take these thoughts further, on this site or in unhurried conversations in whatever setting feels most appropriate, and clutching whatever drink suits the mood and the surroundings. I don't expect to be agreed with in all I share on these pages. I welcome responses that help me to revisit the important questions for myself.

My hope is that this is useful. If what I share helps you and I to learn and grow into all that it means to be human, to be in relationship with God, ourselves and each other, and put those things first that are real and that endure, then this will have been time well spent.

This website has a number of pages.

"The Rory Story" simply gives you a bit of background about me, which is important to me, and may be to you. If you have any questions, let me know.

"Nooit, Bru!"  is a sort of reverse blog. You have the opportunity to post responses or thoughts about what I have said or posted by way of sermon, image, word or music. If you think I'm a bit up myself, say so, but give a good reason. You can, of course, say nice things too. I may occasionally post a thought of my own, though these are frustratingly rare.

"Stimulus/Response"   contains audio downloads of my sermons that can be played on any computer or mp3 player. Be sure to read the info so you know what you're getting.......

"Words & Music"  will have a new song and poem or quote on a regular basis. Words and music move me. Perhaps they will move you too.

"Cartoons & Images"  As for the above, just not words or music.

Cartoons, images, music and poems on this site are used by me without permission, so they won't stay on the site for long. I'll always give you some info to go hunting for the sources yourself if you'd like to do some worthwhile shopping.

"Useful Links"  is just that. I don't necessarily agree with everything that I provide a link to, but these are sites and blogs that make me think. That's good enough for me.

"Contact Info"  is contact info. Any questions? Good.

My intention is to exclude nobody, though there may be occasions when the content prods and pokes more than it embraces. Both are necessary in my life.

Lastly, I pay no fees for this website. The deal is that it will have some unobtrusive advertisements as you can see. Some of the ads may in fact be far more interesting than this site, though some of them  appear to be the entrance to the rabbit hole.....

Have fun.
